Functional materials

Functional materials for sustainable energy applications covers a wide range of material properties due to the function needed in energy applications, e.g. solar power, hydrogen production and storage or fuel cells.
Controlled synthesis of well-defined materials and complex layered systems for photovoltaic, photochemical and electrochemical applications as well as high-temperature corrosion-resistant coatings requires a fundamental understanding of the relationship between structure, method of preparation and functional properties. Therefore structural characterization especially on the nanoscale and multiscale simulation of functional materials is essential for material design with respect to energy applications.
